Climbing Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is one of the most beloved cottage-garden climbers, treasured for its intensely sweet, honey-and-orange-blossom fragrance and its delicate, ruffled wing-shaped petals. This mixed-colors selection delivers a painterly blend of pinks, purples, blues, whites, and bicolors on long, slender stems, making it a favourite for cutting; the more you pick, the more it blooms. Train it up a trellis, fence, or arch for a fragrant living screen.
In Egypt, sow direct in autumn, roughly mid-October to November, so plants build deep roots over the cool winter and flower from late winter into early spring before the heat arrives. In the cooler, humid Delta you can sow a little later into November; in hotter Upper Egypt favour the earlier mid-October window. Soak the seeds for about 24 hours first to soften the hard coat, then cover them with about 1 cm of soil, since darkness aids germination. Germination takes 14-21 days at a soil temperature of about 13-18 C. Space plants about 20-30 cm apart in full sun (6 or more hours of direct sun daily). A late-winter sowing (January-February) works as a fallback but gives shorter, less vigorous plants.
Enrich the bed before planting by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Once plants are in active growth, or if you grow them in containers, feed with a high-potassium fertiliser such as tomato feed, following the label instructions.
Sweet peas need rich, well-drained soil kept evenly moist; mulching helps hold moisture. In dry weather check every 3-4 days and water enough to wet the full root depth. When young plants reach about 7.5-10 cm tall, pinch out the shoot tip for bushier growth. As climbers they need trellis or netting support; set plants within about 5-7.5 cm of it and provide tall structures up to roughly 1.8-2.4 m. Watch for slugs, snails, and aphids, and avoid replanting in the same spot two years running. Cut stems when about half the flowers are open, and deadhead often to keep blooms coming.
